Selected : Eric Lindley (New Album, NYTimes Feature)

About a year ago, we featured Eric Lindley on the blog. Eric is a singer, writer and composer who makes beautifully hushed lo-fi pop songs in the style of Smog, Elliott Smith, Arthur Russell, et al, but abstracted with sparse electronics.

This month, he will release Oh, Light under his new moniker, Careful. The new record is available streaming here, and will be released physically later this month. Careful was also featured this week as a New York Times Critics Choice.

On a personal note, I love this music, and I’m glad it’s getting the exposure it deserves!

Stephan Bodzin.

Stephan Bodzin is an experimental electronic artist and minimal techno producer from Bremen, Germany. He started a label called HERZBLUT, and in 2007 released a full-length album called Liebe Ist.

My fascination with minimal house and techno is all so new, but it continues to grow daily. Especially when I encounter tracks like this.

The Melanaster Band will be joining a slew of Asheville’s finest indie musicians for the All Go West festival on Saturday, April 24th. The event takes place on two outdoor stages in West Asheville (in front of Harvest Records, next to the Rocket Club) and is absolutely free!

Bottom line : Free music, beer, and fun in West Asheville. April 24th, 12PM to 10PM.

Beach House now has the distinction of being the only “Selected” feature artist to appear twice on the blog. The first post appeared about half a year ago.

I’m so happy for all of their current success, and their new album, Teen Dream, is stunning. Highly, highly recommended. The CD comes with a companion DVD of music videos + goodies, so make sure to get physical (like Olivia).

Rumor has it that they will be gracing Asheville with a performance at the Grey Eagle on April 30th. I’ll see you there!

Selected : Micachu and the Shapes

Micachu and the Shapes is an experimental pop trio from London fronted by composer Mica Levi.

Levi made her mark as a UK garage DJ before starting the band, but she’s also classically-trained and was commissioned to write a piece for the London Philharmonic while attending school. It’s hard to imagine what kind of band would be born from that mix-up, but here they are.

The Shapes present a really exploratory kind of songwriting, using some homemade instruments (modded vacuum!) and angular percussion samples to manifest their experimental pop songs. It’s fantastically unpretentious, playful stuff. The two videos below illustrate the many shapes of the Shapes – the punky, Deerhoof-like “Lips,” and the vacuum concerto heartbreaker “Turn Me Well.”
