Skew Records just released the Asheville Beat Tape Vol 1, a showcase of some of Asheville’s essential electronic producers.

In a clearing surrounded by mountains a distinctive sound rings out. This sound is the imaginative echo of the Asheville electronic music scene. It’s a sound that has been growing rapidly within this mountain community, where an ever-growing artist population constantly pushes the variety of musical production through the envelope.

The idea for an Asheville Beat Tape came from Nigel One, a long-time DJ and producer who has been involved in Asheville’s electronic music scene since the early 2000′s. Soon after joining forces with Skew Records, Nigel decided to spearhead the idea of bringing some of the surrounding talent together to form an Asheville Beat Tape. After a month’s time, Nigel had collected a multitude of tracks from area producers, and brought on Skew producers Peripheral and DM Stair to help artfully and seamlessly arrange the tracks into order. The result is a 45-minute mix of inspiring production and composition styles…

This Saturday, December 4th, the Melanaster Band returns to the Emerald Lounge, joined by folk / pop heroes Uncle Mountain.

Uncle Mountain combines complex, multi-layered harmonies with Americana songwriting to create a sound that is “rich, layered, lively, and most surprisingly, cohesive.” – CityBeat (Cincinnati). They are also cuter than a baby Fennec fox. These guys keep getting better over time, and are among the best bands based in Asheville!

This is something I mashed-up really quick a few weeks ago. It’s a combination of this weird thing, and a Boards of Canada track called “Slow This Bird Down.” Since September 28th it has had 3,285 views, making it the most circulated thing I’ve contributed to the Internet. It’s fascinating what connects with people.

I also made this BlackBerry spoof a few weeks before that. Kind of a sarcastic send-up of a recent ad that sends me into fits, for some reason. The guy is just… I hate him, and I have no idea why. So I had to do something.

Finally, the “shreds” phenomenon (first featured here) shows no sign of slowing down. The latest variant of this meme is “Radio Disney” versions of hardcore metal tunes (Slayer, Cannibal Corpse etc). This one isn’t mine, but it’s pretty amazing.

October, So Far

OK, time to take a break from the constant stream of promotion for an honest update. Please, come in, have a seat.

First, things are going swimmingly in the world of Melanaster Records. I just returned from Trinumeral 10 in Miami, where I performed alongside Asheville favorite DJ Bowie, recent Asheville-by-way-of-Miami transplant Panther God, and national acts like Tokimonsta, Blackalicious, and Big Boi. I performed the first night at 7th Circuit, holding it down outside in the beautiful Miami night air to a scattered crowd of engaged onlookers (that trance-like swaying state means you’re either bored or fascinated) while Otto Von Shirach’s sideshow / carnival / performance art electro madness raged inside the club.

It was not like this. Well, kinda. We definitely said, “I’m in Miami trick!” a lot.

The rest of the time I just enjoyed the myriad performances from all colors of the electronic music spectrum. Everything from raw hip-hop (Blackalicious) to mashup party jams (Mochipet) to techy, aggressive dubstep (Heyoka).

October has a few more things in store. First, there’s this:

… where I will likely display more aggressive electro / house flavors for the people (huge sound system). Next, this date will be special for Asheville:

Keep it on the calendar. And at the end of October, of course, there’s the brain-melting lineup at MoogFest, and though I haven’t yet committed to playing, I’ll likely end up at some after-party somewhere holding it down.

So there we are. Since you have made it this far, here’s a special secret:

There will be a new Melanaster release in October.

June has been insane, which accounts for the lack of updates / Melanaster news as of late. We’ll be back soon in full-force, new & improved. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s been going on with my other projects:

• Mr. Invisible spent a week in L.A. earlier this month as part of our sponsorship with Native Instruments. We shot a promotional video for their Maschine workstation and played a show at Low End Theory, alongside Daddy Kev, D-Styles and Gaslamp Killer. Stellar.

• Uncle Mountain just wrapped up a week-long residency in Manteo (outer banks, NC) with the ECU Summer Dance Theater. Incredibly fun, miserably hot, days off in the ocean, bodysurfing among jellyfish blooms.

• Modo is about to embark on a short southeast tour that will take us to the Pensacola Museum of Art, among other places, fresh from a killer show at the Lexington Ave Brewery.

Combine all that craziness with DJ gigs here and there and you can see why the blog has gotten little love lately. But look forward to new videos, new music, show announcements, and more Melanaster goodness.

Keepon is an interactive robotic toy designed to be used in social and behavioral therapy. His simple interactions can aid in developing communication in kids with autism or developmental disorders. He’s something of a YouTube celebrity (he stars in Spoon’s “Don’t You Evah” Video), but this simple drum exercise is my favorite demonstration.

Beach House now has the distinction of being the only “Selected” feature artist to appear twice on the blog. The first post appeared about half a year ago.

I’m so happy for all of their current success, and their new album, Teen Dream, is stunning. Highly, highly recommended. The CD comes with a companion DVD of music videos + goodies, so make sure to get physical (like Olivia).

Rumor has it that they will be gracing Asheville with a performance at the Grey Eagle on April 30th. I’ll see you there!
